Florence Biennale 2001: The Conundrum Series

In these two pairs of paintings I have continued to pursue my interest in symmetry and its disruption with asymmetrical elements. I counterposed colors that created dissonance between the cool hues of the pyramid shapes in the center and the warm hues in the surrounding fields - I created a riddle for myself. I then attempted to reduce and resolve the riddle by allowing improvised forms to go in and out of the pyramid shapes until a sense of harmony could be achieved. The images of a Japanese Kendo mask in the centers seemed appropriate to finally bring together the dissonant elements.

The Tenganan Whispers

These paintings constitute an attempt to explore my own calligraphic signs on rice paper I brought from China in 1985. In these 4 paintings, mounted in scrolls in Japan, I juxtapose articulation with its absence, complexity and simplicity, ugliness and lyricism. It is interesting that the slides of details of these paintings resemble the details on Le Marteau Series even though here there was no attempt to translate music but to just follow the patterns created on the paper.
